This will change your life

Have you ever heard of scripture writing? I had not, until I stumbled upon a lady on you tube who was talking about it, her name is Sherri. She said it would change your life, and she showed different examples of it, ways to do it, and how to get started. I was definitely drawn to many of the creative pages, but I was curious of how it would change my life.

So what is scripture writing? It's just like it sounds: writing scripture on paper. It can be a favorite verse you write down, a couple verses together, some verses about the same topic, or even a whole book of the Bible. It's very individual, whatever you feel led to do. I do suggest, though, that you find a spiral notebook or some other kind of notebook to use so that you have your scripture writing all in one place. I use both: I have a spiral notebook that is just pen on paper, no drawings or frills of any kind. Then I have a mixed media notebook, where I really get creative and use all kinds of media: stickers, washi tape, markers, watercolor, anything goes. That's just me, because I love to do it. If you aren't inclined that way, you can just use a spiral notebook and write your verses down with pen or pencil. It all works.

I've been scripture writing for a couple months at least by now. I was attracted to some of the creative pages I've seen on some blog posts, but mostly what stuck with me was Sherri saying, "It will change your life." I wanted to see what she meant. Incidentally, I can hear some people's thoughts saying, "I don't have time, I couldn't squeeze another thing into my day." I get it. But hear this: scripture writing doesn't have to take place every day, or even every week. It can be done every month, or randomly even. And you can spend only from 5-10 minutes if you want. But I will say this, it's something that the more you do it, the more benefits you reap. And if you spend any time scrolling on your phone, you have time for scripture writing.

That being said, I would like to share with you some of the benefits of scripture writing. This list comes from The Analog Pastor, https://theanalogpastor.com, who, in my opinion, hit the nail on the head:

Handwriting is a creative activity in itself. Putting pen to paper connects your mind with what your hand is writing. Did you know that when you write something down, whether it's on a grocery list or a phone number, that this requires 100 % of your attention? So writing scripture down increases your attention to a subject, while being a creative outlet at the same time. It also forces you to slow down and observe more.

It can be relaxing and relieve stress, because it refocuses your mind from the things in your life that are producing anxiety.

It can provide an easy way to start your devotional time. Even with just one verse you choose randomly, it can do this.

It strengthens your retention. Remember, as you write a verse(s), 100 % of your mind is focusing on what you are writing.

It encourages prayer, because it reveal's God's nature and His promises, which are the foundation for prayer.

It increases your faith. "Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God." (Romans 10:17)

It helps you pray God's Word into your life and the life of others. This also strengthens your relationship with God and brings you to a new level of intimacy with Him.

It connects you with the Truth and enhances your spiritual growth, and you are more likely to internalize the teachings and apply them to your life.

It leaves a tangible legacy of faith. After I'm gone my grandchildren will have a written record of my faith walk. What better thing to leave behind than that?

I can attest to the fact that scripture writing does all these things, and even more. The picture above shows a few pages from my mixed media book, and I made sure to include a page from my spiral notebook, the one that only uses pen on paper. It is my hope that you might be willing to try scripture writing, it will definitely change your life.

Please let me know in the comments your thoughts on this post, and if you would be interested in getting further knowledge on how to get started with scripture writing, what you need, and how to work it into your day. If there is enough interest, I might share what has worked for me.

Thank you for reading this, and God bless!
